Sauble River Marina & Lodge | Truly Independent

Charlene from Sauble Beach, Ontario tells us about following her dream to own a lodge in Canada, and a little more about her property.

Q: Share with us how you became involved with the Sauble River Marina & Lodge Resort.

In the late 1990's my husband and I decided we wanted something to keep us preoccupied when we retired.  We looked across Ontario.  From campgrounds, to motels.  We finally came across this unmaintained property, that was doing a few jet-ski, and cottage rentals. This property became our dream.  We have put our heart and soul into it.  One of the best moves we made.  The most frightening and rewarding.

Q: Tell us a little more about your resort and marina.

We purchased in 2000, survived the summer and then gutted it and started from scratch in the units.

Increasing the water rental inventory we started with 3 jet-ski, 3 canoes a couple of peddle boats.

Today we run 100 boats for rental through here. Starting in mid May till mid October. Consisting of Canoes, Yamaha Waverunners, Kayaks, Peddle Boats, Bicycles, Rickscycles, Row Boats, Corcl's, Lazy River Tubing, Hydro Bike.

We have year round accommodations in a seasonal tourist town, which is rare in Sauble Beach, Ontario.  Our prime location comes with short walks to Sunsets of Sauble Beach on Lake Huron.  We are located in the amazing Bruce Peninsula surrounded by Provincial Parks, Bruce Trail & Side Trails, Sauble Falls, several inland lakes, rivers, streams, golf courses, and farm land. Specatacular vistas, and history, birding and natural fish spawning river at our doorstep.

Q: As an independent property, what are some of the challenges you face?

Keeping up with all the technology, when we are a mom and pop operation.  Not having unlimited time and resources to get through paper work and grant applications.

Q: What advice would you give to those in the hotel and resort industry, especially during this challenging time?

Be patient, and take advantage of the time to do the little upgrades, and changes that you have been planning and dreaming of.

Using your creative  mind on how to be ready to set yourselves aside for when things start up again.  In Covid-19 Style.

Wishing you all the best to be stronger when Covid passes.
